Laylah Amatullah Barrayn jest dokumentalistką i portrecistką, która od 20 lat zajmuje się fotografią. Poprzez fotografię prowokuje społeczności osób czarnoskórych do wyrażania swojej tożsamości kolektywnie i indywidualnie. Jest współautorką MFON: Women Photographers of the African Diaspora. To pierwsza od blisko 30 lat antologia, która przedstawia fotografię uprawianą przez kobiety pochodzenia afrykańskiego.
Barrayn często publikuje na łamach New York Timesa. Otrzymała szereg grantów i stypendiów z Institute for Research in African American Studies przy Columbia University, Research Foundation na City University of New York, En Foco i Brooklyn Arts Council.
Jej prace pokazywane były na wystawach m.in. w Galarie Ethiopiques (Senegal), Brighton Photo Biennial (UK), MANIFESTA European Biennial of Contemporary Art (Włochy), Open Ateliers Zuidoost Gallery (Holandia), Rencontres d'Arles (Francja) oraz w Muzeum Fotografii Współczesnej (USA).
Barrayn wygłaszała przemowy na temat swojej pracy w Tate Modern, Harvard University, The Schomburg Center for Research on Black Culture i World Press Photo.
Była jedną ze Stu Bohaterek Royal Photographic Society’s (UK). Barrayn została finalistką w konkursie im Dorothei Lange-Paul Taylor w Center for Documentary Studies (Uniwersytet Duke) i była nominowana do nagrody Infinity Award for Artist’s Book w International Center of Photography. Zasiadała w składach jurorskich podczas konkursów Getty Images, Foto Evidence, The Fence i Three Rivers Arts Festival.
